Jeff is correct, my bike made 56hp at sea level and race week we took it up above Woodland Park at approx. 9100' to dyno it again (approx. the same elevation as the starting line). Bike made 42hp but was jetted right.
I figured having the jetting right at the start would give me a fat-ish bike at the summit but other than a noticible drop in power, bike seemed to run great all the way to the summit.
From talking to the guys with trick engines, seems like they are running altitude-specific motors with as high as 16:1 compression ratios so that in the thin air they are still fairly high compression. This is where the money comes in cause you'd only be able to use that motor at the Peak.
The great thing about Pikes Peak is you can spend all the money and try to win or you can spend a reasonable amount and have a blast too. Look at times for #3, 4, 5 and 6 in Q450. All very different bikes and riders but all within 17 seconds. Pretty good competition!
