hey ecko, i purchased the service manual for the honda 450r and have been reading up on it and it doesnt look that hard ... in fact im confident enough to do it right now .... i dont know what part of tucson your in but if you want to set something up let me know ..... what i really find interesting is that the service manual says to check your vavles every 100 hours????? ... but if you go to any service shop they say 10hrs to 6 gas tank fulls????? i find that very interesting ..... either the manual is wrong which i doubt or service centers are trying to rape us in fees by scaring us into believing that we need to bring it in once a month .... guess ill find out the truth cause im going to be doing my own bikes now ..... this is just my opinion of course ...

I am also out east in Tucson and will help you guys out with anything but the valves. I'm not too familiar with the Honda 450r valves but can help out with all the other maintenance.

    Default valves

Like was said earlier in this thread, adjusting your valves is not near as difficult as it sounds.first you either need a shim kit or find a shop that will trade out shims(because they are reusable) or sell you singles.then you need a micrometer(harbor freight) have engine top dead center comp stroke, check clearance, mark cam gear position(on duel cam also count chain links between top gear teeth, usually 9 and mark)remove tensioner, remove cam/s,remove buckets with magnet, shims usually stick to inside of bucket, measure shim and replace with correct shim. Shims are marked in hundredths of a millimeter if your feeler gauges don't read in mm. 1/1000 of an inch = about 16 1/100 mm. Most shims are marked if the numbers aren't worn off.reinstall buckets and cams and recheck clearances, readjust if needed(thats why you really want shim kit, about 80.00 on ebay)Preload tensioner before you install and make sure you release tension load after. Some tensioners dont hold the load by themselves, take a piece of sheet metal and cut a t shaped piece to fit down in to hold set screw to body of tensioner while installing and remove after to reapply tension to chain.see piece of cake
