    Question Bonded title?

So I'm looking to get back into the offroad business - mostly for my 6 yr old son. My wife & I are from MI & both grew up off road riding - mostly w/ motorcycles....

I bought a Suzuki DR-Z 110 motorcycle from a guy around the corner. Long story short - the title wasn't in his name & now I'm told I have to get a BONDED title...

I've been watching Craigslist looking to get a small quad for him as well (he'd much rather have a quad + the DR-Z 110 is way to heavy/big for him to learn on). He has experience riding a Suzuki LT80 quad this summer. I notice alot of the quads/bikes on CL also don't have a title...

Do I need to get a bonded title OR can he just ride them around w/o a title at all? Can you get an ORV (that's what they call them in MI) sticker w/o a title (bonded or otherwise)?

Can anyone tell me how much of a pain in the butt it is to get the bonded title?

Thanks to everyone that can help...

    They can be a pain.
When you bond it you get a bound for a set amount on the bike/quad. The DMC or you trys to get ahold of all owners it had listed.

best thing to do is find out who was on the title and find them. Have them sign a title over to you. get that title transfered.

If you are going to ride in the desert you will need the cool sticker which you will need the title to get.
If you 100% ride a track it won't matter, they don't care nor check.

Now-a-days I won't buy anything without a clean title in the persons name I am buying it from.

How do I find out who was the last person on the title? At the DMV, they would not tell me.

I had to get a bonded title for a golf cart I'd bought 2 years ago. The DMV or MVD (whatever it's called) told me to write down and state (they notorized) that I bought the vehicle from a guy named (Bob sounds good) Bob in a parking lot for X amount (I went with $200.00). Then I had to go to an Auto Insurance company and get a Bonded Title. It cost me $225.00 (It goes by the Book Value which they figured out to be $1,800) and it was for 2 years. The way "I understood it was", if the previous owner (MVD / DMV did a check to make sure it wasn't stolen) wanted it back within 2 years, the Insurance Company would pay them $200.00. Insurance Company told me I could get a regular title after 2 years. I ended up trading it in for a Teryx about 2 months after I registered it and the dealer never mentioned anything about the "Bonded Title".

I know there are ways to get things down there. The DMV or whatever its called is smart but retarded at the same time, lol

There are a bunch of threads on this over on Ridingarizona.com. Do a search and you will have plenty to read. Many go to third party companies rather than the DMV and seem to get things done a bit faster/better.

I'm from MI too and it took me awhile to get the nomencalture down.

Michigan's DNR (Dept of Natural Resources) is the equivilant to our BLM (Bureau of Land Management)
Michigan calls them ORVs (Off Road vehicles)
Back there you need a DNR registration for the ORV.

AZ calls them OHVs (Off Highway Vehicles)
Arizona requires an OHV sticker to ride 'State Trust' lands and an OHV plate of either flavor to just register the vehicle with the state.

MVD & DMV seem to be interchangeable nation wide.
