Yep, we got dust, they got mud.....
Most of my off-road racing I did back in the midwest was in conditions just like that. You get good at water proofing your motor and electrics. WD-40 is your friend!!
Brings back some memories, a lot more larger trees to run into as well. hey elder, you ever use Pam?
On the body panels once. The mud did not stick but the Pam was harder to get off then the mud. Started using a good coat of Rain Dance wax.
We sprayed WD-40 in the distributor cap, points, etc. and the spark plug caps then on all of it too!! Went as far as putting little itty-bitty tie wraps in the plug wire ends when it was really, really wet. All electrical connections were siliconed.
I used Rolloffs until they ran out, as they always did, then we had a roll of paper towel in a plastic garbage bag. Pull the cardboard core out of it and made a giant baby wipe dipsenser out of it. Strap it up under the dash to keep it as dry as possible. That worked real well. But I can't tell you how many times I had so much mud in my eyes it would take a day for it all to work its way out. Felt like a welding flash burn.![]()
One day I'll tell you about the time I ended up in creek and almost did not get the belts off before the water came up to my face.....![]()
Yeah, Pam isn't that great. I used it at Washougal one year and it was a pain to get off. Now I just carry it in the race trailer to offer to others at mud races.
Mud in the eyes is VERY bad. I know a few riders that have spent a couple days in the hospital due to making laps without goggles. I removed my goggles ONCE.... never again. Now I plan ahead and just pit every lap for goggles if needed. My hot pit kinda looks like a retail store with 10 sets of goggles sitting on the table ready to go, but it works.![]()
