Well this thread went far. Your trans problem are the dogs. I take it your 450 is an 06+?

It would be a good idea to have the transmission backcut to help shift engagement while you're inside, especially if track riden. The edges of the engagement dogs wear out (round off) and cannot retain proper engagement under power. The shift from 3rd-4th is the most common to have issues with.

I have an '06 that had a similar issue. I broke the dogs off third and fifth gear. I bought a new set and made the side fillets larger and polished the surfaces. I'm a mechanical engineer and have finite element analysis tools to check stress concentrations. The larger fillets lower the stress and the polishing in that area reduce crack growth. So far it has lasted longer than the first set and I've been riding/racing it harder. Let me know if you need more info or pics.
