    Thumbs down broken LTR HELP!!!

ok after two years of racing my LTR my trans. went out! I was riding at the dunes last wed and I down shifted to 4th and the bike then started jumping gears. Its like it was jumping from 2nd to 4th... Then I pulled in my clutch and at that point the rear tires locked up and I came to a sliding stop. The shifter was in its normal position but it wouldn't move up or down, and with the clutch lever in or out it would not free the rear tires. They remained locked. Then after my buddy rode to the truck and came and rescued me The shifter will now move and click into all the gears and sometimes the tires will roll freely with the quad in neutral, and sometimes it won't. And now sometimes the tires will roll with the clutch lever in and sometimes they won't. So after getting it home I pulled the clutch cover off and did not see anything out the ordinary. But I've never needed to change my clutch either so I'm not well experienced in what to look for! I'm sure this is a trans. problem, but does anyone have any input on who to talk to about the problem or what it possibly could be???? Any help is great thanks!!!!!!

The trannys in the ltr are not the strongest for sure. I have one of ours torn apart on the work bench replacing 4th gear right now. Ive already done 3rd drive and driven 8 months ago. sounds like its time to do a tear down.

Did you pull the entire cover from that side of the case? If you pulled just the clutch cover you may not have seen the shifter pin or fork. Do you have a shifter pin relocater installed? I know the shifter pins are one of the first things to go. Hopefully that's your only problem, if not, like racedad said, it could be a gear.

No I have nothing installed in that part of the bike! How do I locate the Shifter pin?

You need to take off the entire case cover on that side. Before you can do this you have to take off the clutch springs, plates, and hub. Then you will be able to pull the cover once you drain the coolant. Once you have the cover pulled, and even when you have the entire clutch out, to the left you will see the the shifter fork and pin (not sure if these are the exact terms). The shifter fork is attached to a shaft that is attached to the shift lever and the fork kind of sits on the shifter pin. This pin is originally fastened to the case, which is notorious for snapping off. To fix this, the pin is relocated; it's taken out of the case fastened to a shift pin relocater that you can purchase from BCS or fuelatv <http://www.fuelatv.com/LTR450.htm>

If I were I you would start here. If you don't see anything broke or out of place then you will have to dig deeper.

hey, sounds like you broke the shift pin, and maybe have a little more damage, not sure, normaly when the shift pin breaks, it just stays locked in that gear and will run in that gear only.............. down shifting, espeicaly in MX will usualy cause it to break..............if it were mine, I would send it to ATP racing in Florida to have it gone through...................

ALSO................the LTR gear case is identical to a honda TRX by design.

To check the shift pin do I need to pull the motor out? Or can I do that with it in the frame?

You can leave the motor in the frame. I would recommend removing your nerf bar on that side and foot peg.
