    Default Header Wrap

    I am thinking of getting some header wrap for the YFZ from this guy on eBay. (Anyone in the know let me know if this is not a good choice. I do understand this will turn to a grey color after awhile)

    The only reason I am doing this is to keep from burning up my pants. I understand that wrapping keeps the exhaust temps up & increases flow through the pipe. So my question is will I need to rejet after doing this or not? I wouldn't think it would change that much but I'm not sure.

    Also will starting the wrap just after the 180' bend cause any problems or should I wrap from the flange to the slip joint?

    This is what I use on mine http://www.designengineering.com/cat...ust-wrap-black get the 1" stuff, soak it in water for about 10 seconds and then wrap the pipe. By soaking it in water you can get it nice and tight and it conforms to the pipe alot better.I went from the flange all the way back. Once it's on let it dry throughly adn then spray it with a couple coats of sealer and you are good to go. Mine has been on for over a year now and is just starting to turn grey and I think I ride alot more than you do. Shouldn't have to rejet (I didn't) but I'm sure Rudy will know better than I.

    I'm also thinking about having Jet-Hot coat mine. They have a location here in the valley and the last time I checked I think the price was about $100

    It's interesting how these vendors promote their products. The eBay guy says sealer is not needed and offers only 2" wrap, DEI recommends sealer and offers 1" wrap. At least they both suggest 1/4" overlap.

    What is everyone elses consensus?

    I didnt use any kind of sealer on mine and have had no issues,didnt need to rejet either on mine. I did soak it in water before installing and that really seemed to help when wrapping it. I went from just back of the flange almost all the way to the muffler.

    I used the 2" with 1/4" overlap. I'm not sure what the difference in 1" or 2" would be but I know a lot of guys will use two inch. The one inch would be easier to get around tighter bends. I didn't soak it in water. I used a spray bottle. I sprayed the wrap before I applied and during; it does help. I didn't use a sealer and I didn't rejet because I have EFI. I will be putting on wrap again here soon with my new TDC system (It will be interesting this time around with the bung on the header) and I will be running the autotune afterwards, but for a carbed bike I don't think it would make much difference to rejet.

    Also, I would take the wrap all the way to the can or at least over the slip joint. On the LTRs the pipe is close to the intake so I wrap farther past the slip joint, but wrapping over and beyond the slip joint prevents any possible exhaust escaping.

    Oh and I am pretty sure that's the same guy I got my wrap from. The black fades quick so I would get the copper or white wrap. Easman had a few things to say about wrap back in an older post. I think the post was called Dasa vs. TDC

    I also used 2". I overlapped closer to 1/2"-3/4" and ran mine from the head to the can. I wet mine and applied it, keeping it pulled tight as I went. Instead of metal wire ties or hose clamps to tie up the ends I used double braided safety wire. You can twist it tight and it holds it well. The black wrap will fade but if you keep the pressure washer away from it the wrap will last a lot longer.

    I'm not sure I will run it on my new exhaust, it's pretty hard to keep clean

    Thanks guys. I did go back and read a Dasa vs TDC thread before posting this. I agree that a power washer should be used with care. And like I said I'm doing this to keep from burning my riding pants. The little bit of power increase is a bonus. And it sounds like no jetting will be a required. I will wrap from flange to the can just to keep the pipe temperature consistent.

    You guys were faster than Rudy on this one!

    Mike, the header wrap wont stop you from getting hot but its cool enough u can put ur finger on for a second or two and it wont melt ur skin! lol in my expereince use plenty of sealant, also as the directions go you are supposed to have about 1/2 an over lap so if you use the 1 inch do a .5 inch overlap and try to be as consistant as you can in the wrap, if you have some sections with a ton of overlap it could cause the heat to be different in areas of the pipe(not sure if this will cause any damage or not) also be aware most place will not even consider a mfg defect if you happen to have a failure (from what i was told by a few shops when i was doing my first head wrap) mine started to fade rather fast as i was washing the bike 2-3 times a week , best solution to heat protection, long songs, riding pants, boots

    Mike47 hooked me up with some he had left over. Picked up a can of sealer and wrapped it up. Took my time, sprayed it down with water as I went, paid attention to spacing. Let it dry, then a few coats of sealer. I'll post pics after the burn in.

    I was thinking about doing this a while back. Yet, I got forwarded something that resembled an op ed piece saying that header wrap was bad and voided all warranties, yada, yada, yada.
    Any comments on pipes being damaged by header wrap?
    Post up those pics elder... even though it has been 4 months. LOL
