    Default Stop Error?!??!

I have a troubleshooting question here! if you can help out, that'd be great.

I recently added more ram to my system 2 x 256mb to add my my dual gig sticks (just xtra ram I had laying around), and also reinstalled my plextor dvd +/- RW drive with a SATA cable. Since then, (last week) my PC would shut off for no reason what so ever, and it would happen at random times, it would just shut down, and reboot itself.

When I got back on my desktop, I get a wonderful pop-up that says a serious error has occured, a "stop error" from which I understand from microsoft's website definitions, is something in the system causes my PC to just shut off and reboot.

This happens at random times...it doesn't matter what im doing, it even restarts after my PC goes to a login screen after being idle for 15 minutes

There should be a number for the Stop code. Shoot me that number.

What model motherboard do you have? Or Model of the PC.

If you have installed both the 256MB sticks and the 1GB bundle, totalling four sticks. The all should be the same speed, and type of RAM. It's better have the same MFG too, That will depend how forgiving the BIOS is on the Motherboard. I have run different mfgs, had them work and sometimes not.

Try unplugging the new RAM, boot it back up and see if anything changes. If not, then put it back in and remove the new DVD drive. Reboot and see if that helps.

    I'm leaning towards RAM.

    This utility will help.

    Windows error reporting says

    Problem caused by Device Driver

You received this message because a device driver installed on your computer caused the Windows operating system to stop unexpectedly. This type of error is referred to as a "stop error." A stop error requires you to restart your computer.

Sounds like you have a driver issue. Besides the DVD drive what else has been installed recently?

    Have you looked at this?

Follow the above instructions, look at Device Manager and see if any devices have a Yellow Exclamation Point tagged on them.

Can you boot to 'Safe Mode' and run an anti virus scan?

eep, I thought I posted a reply, it was my plextor dvd rw drive that I hooked back up, the driver conflicts with something, and it hasn't randomly shut off since I pulled it out.
