Which notebook is best?
With Christmas rapidly approaching, I get asked alot about laptops and the new Netbooks. I will post something later on Netbooks but here is a study done by a PC/Laptop warranty provider, Squaretrade, that shows some interesting results.
One in three laptops will fail within three years.
That's 33%!! Most people would not buy anything that has a 33% failure rate.
10% fail due to accident, user caused.
20% will have software/hardware malfunction of some kind, but can be repaired.
31% fail completely because the 'smoke got out' and cannot be repaired.
Here's the list from worst to best:
9. HP, Largest market share 25% fail rate in three years.
8. Gateway, 23.5% fail rate. Sad because Gateway was an excellent laptop in it's day.
7. Acer, gaining market share to overtake Dell but a 23.3% fail rate is not helping.
6. Lenovo (IBM), dropping market share, 21% fail rate.
5. Dell, 18.3% fail rate.
4. Mac, 17.4% fail rate.
3. Sony, BMW of the laptop world, 16.8% fail rate.
2. Toshiba, 15.7% fail rate.
1. Asus, 15.6% being the best in the market. They also carry a line of Netbooks.
Just like in the PC world, and other worlds for that matter. You get what you pay for. Sometimes all you need is a 'throwaway' computer. But other times it is money better spent by biting the bullet and getting a good one right off the bat.
See the full report here.

Three questions:
1) Is this data accurate for desktops too?
2) Of the Asus notebooks, which one is recommended? I saw they have one called Lamborghini
3) Is a netbook the "smaller" version of a notebook?

Three questions:
1) Is this data accurate for desktops too?
No, I'll see if I can find one for desktops. Generally, if you need to finance one get a Dell. If you can pay cash, call me. I can get you more bang for the buck.
2) Of the Asus notebooks, which one is recommended? I saw they have one called Lamborghini
They didn't break it down by brand/model. I'm sure there is a side by side comparison somewhere on the net.
3) Is a netbook the "smaller" version of a notebook?
Yes, it is basically a device to be used for email, & light surfing. You could use it to suck pics and video from your cameras to free up memory card space. While you could do some office apps on it, it's size would not be condusive for a daily work horse. They are throw away devices.
