Go to the Windows update site and make sure that you have fully patched your system with all the available updates. Then go and get the latest updates from your anti-virus company, make sure that your firewalls are on and working and you should be safe as long as you use common sense on what you are clicking on and the sites you are going to. Be forewarned that Microsoft is getting hammered right now, I read they are getting as hit as 10 million hits per minute so their servers are slammed right now.

    Thanks Bowtie!!

Sorry for the late reply people. I was busy fielding the same questions from many of my clients. Like any of these "Dooms Day" attacks. If you follow good PC Practices in the first place the threat is greatly reduced.

Configure good hardware and software firewalls.
    Keep the OS updated
Keep the anti virus definitions updated
Run realtime Malware/Spyware scanners or at least run them manually on a regular basis

The most important things are to pay attention to what you click on while surfing. Know what sites you download from and what the risks associated with downloading are. ALWAYS question attachments on an email. If not sure, delete it. Do not click on any pop up or other offer saying "you are infected!!!! Click here to remove the infection!!" No "reputable" software company uses these tactics. Free Smilies, free screen savers or discount/coupon shopping offers almost always contain malware/spyware.

There are many things one can do to protect themselves. Be aware of what they are and use them.
