I have used many remote access programs in my travels but the one I have been using recently is easy to set up, easy to use, It's Secure and they have a FREE version.
www.logmein.com
They have other versions too, with more features, and they cost a few dollars, but I have not needed them in my normal tech support situations.
You don't need the IP address of your PC, or open ports on your firewalls like VNC and others. It's alot faster than the old PCAnywhere & LapLink. It's alot like logging into Webmail like Yahoo, AOL, MSN etc.
All you need to do is go to the link above, create a user account for the FREE version, Remember your login name and password, (your login name is your e-mail address), you need this everytime you want to access your LogMeIn account via web browser. If you are on the PC that you want to access when you are away, follow the prompts to download the software. As you go through the steps to install, pick the Typical method, this works for everyone. The software will ask for a password. This is the only area that people have trouble with, (but they really shouldn't).
LogMeIn defaults to the username & password you are using to open your desktop, (your PC login). If you do not have password setup and your PC automagically opens your desktop, then this will create one and you will need to start using it everytime you use your PC. You should be using passwords anyway. This is a LogMeIn security feature that allows only those who know your PC username & password to be able to access your system. It locks you out for 15 mins after 3 or 4 failed attempts. Even if they happen somehow to hack into your LogMeIn account. I have never heard of anyone hacking a LogMeIn account but it's a nice second layer of security.
Follow the prompts to finish the install, refresh your browser and you should see your PC name appear on your LogMeIn Account Screen. (The one you access via a web browser at www.logmein.com.) Don't try to login to your PC right now. because you will be remotely logging into the PC you are already logged in to directly. Go to another PC. It can be any other PC that has an internet connection. (I have been told this works OK with Dial up, but I don't know anyone with dial up any more and have never tried.
Go to LogMeIn.com, enter your LogMeIn username and password, click your PC name from the list, follow the prompts, it will most likely ask for your PC username the first time, then it remembers it. Enter your PC password, let things load up and use it just as if you are sitting in front of the PC at home, or work if they will let you install LogMeIn there.
You can not transfer files between your home PC and the one you are actually in front of but you can Copy/Paste things between the two. No audio, no printing. It's good for assisting others in fixing problems, checking your e-mail on your home PC. Mailing docs to another PC, like if your forgot that presentation on the home PC and now need it at work, or visa versa.
You can add your friends and family PCs to your list, assuming they will let you. You just email them your LogMeIn Account installer, they install it and they will pop up on your LogMeIn list. If they do not feel comfortable having you be able to log in at any time they can shut down the software on their end and you are locked out untill they launch it again. THeir Pc name will be greyed out on you list.
The best part is you can use it on any PC/laptop that has an internet connection. Just go to the logmein site, login and go.
Hope some of you find this useful!
Have a Great Weekend!!!![]()
